Jason Molina’s music is a type of alchemy. Presented with powerful directness, his songs pull you into the unknown dark corners of yourself, while simultaneously illuminating the path out. This experience is intoxicating. But the simplicity is an illusion. Molina was a complicated narrator, his work rich with its own language and lore. Our documentary will explore the complexities, contradictions, and tragedies within Jason’s life: a collaborator, friend, and husband whose storytelling spilled out from the songs into his personal life, blurring lines between…. fact and fiction. He was a poet who dared the darkness to swallow him, until – through alcoholism and addiction – it finally did leaving behind a staggering body of work that continues to influence future generations of songwriters. The film will trace key moments, collaborations, tall tales, letters & correspondence, and stops along Jason’s restless highway.
